Boilers Tally Seven Top-Three Finishes at Fighting Illini Opener

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Purdue track & field team opened the Fighting Illini Big Ten Relays with seven top-three finishes at Illinois' Demirjian Park on Friday in Champaign, Illinois.

The Boilermakers earned four second-place finishes and placed third three times to go along with 14 personal-best marks on the first day of the two-day meet. Today's action marked the opening event at the Illini's new track, which will play host to the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships next month.

Sophomore Camille Christopher led the way with two top-five finishes on Friday. Her first race was the 100-meter dash, where she was fifth in 11.78 seconds. Ninety minutes later, Christopher placed second in the 200 in 23.79 seconds. That mark would be No. 9 in Purdue history if it wasn't wind-aided and she didn't already hold the seventh-fastest time.

In the men's 200, the Boilermakers were second and third thanks to freshman Marcellus Moore and senior Malcolm Dotson. Moore was the runner-up, in 20.72, and Dotson was just behind him in third with a 20.74. Moore's time would rank No. 7 all-time if he weren't already at No. 4, and Dotson's was a personal-best, though both times were wind-aided.

The Boilermaker distance runners had a strong day, and it was led by freshman Ian Shaw. He was second in the 5,000 with a time of 14:24.97, which is a career-best by more than 21 seconds.

Purdue registered four top-four finishes in four field events early in the day. In the open long jump, senior Jaden Mattox eared a runner-up performance in the women's event, with a mark of 5.92 meters, while sophomore Ife Oketona was fourth for the men with a jump of 6.81 meters.

The first event of the day was the open hammer throw, where freshman Kaia Harris was third thanks to a throw of 50.06 meters. In the pole vault, sophomore Jessica Bray was third, as she cleared 3.91 meters to finish just shy of her career-high set earlier in the year.

Two Boilermakers were fifth in a pair of events, courtesy of senior Samson Colebrooke and sophomore Taylor Mortensen. Colebrooke's mark came in the 400 with a personal-best time of 47.88, and Mortensen's was in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:03.28.

Freshman Naomi Campbell had a pair of personal-record marks. The first was in the 100, in 11.98 to finish ninth, and the second was in the 200 with a wind-aided 24.62 to place 10th. Freshman Cierra Williams also ran a wind-aided PR in the 200, as she was sixth in 24.40 seconds.

In the 100-meter hurdles, freshman Jayla Ellis and senior Rebecca Coan each notched career-record times. Ellis' was 14.08 to finish eighth, and Coan's was a wind-aided 14.65 as she was 21st.

Along with Shaw, six more distance runners ran personal-best times. Three of them came in the 5,000, thanks to sophomore Rachel Anderson (16:43.55, 9th) and junior Megan Slamkowski (16:51.14, 16th) in the women's event and freshman William White (14:50.10, 11th) for the men. Anderson and White's PRs were both by more than 20 seconds.

Freshman Anna Morozov's career-record time was in the 3,000 steeplechase, as she was 10th in 11:28.16 to PR by nearly 30 seconds. Additionally, sophomore John Pieper (3:54.66, 17th) and freshman Luke Upton (4:00.45, 29th) had career-best times for Purdue's distance squad.
