Colebrooke, Moore Advance at NCAA East Prelims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Samson Colebrooke and freshman Marcellus Moore each advanced to the quarterfinals in two events as the Purdue track & field team opened competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.

On a hot, sun-soaked afternoon that turned into a pleasant evening, Colebrooke and Moore advanced in the 100- and 200-meter, and Colebrooke notched the second-fastest 100 time in school history in the process. Colebrooke and Moore were two of six Boilermakers to compete a total of nine times on Wednesday's opening day of east prelims action.

In both of their events, Colebrooke and Moore moved on from Wednesday's 48-runner first-round field to Friday's 24-competitor quarterfinals. The top 12 finishers on Friday advance to the national semifinals at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, from June 9-12.

In Purdue's first running event of the day, Colebrooke and Moore each recorded top-17 finishes in the 100. Colebrooke finished in 10.18, the seventh-fastest time overall and a mark that is tied for No. 2 in team history. As a top-three finisher in his heat, he automatically qualified with the second-fastest time in the third heat. In the next heat, Moore finished in 10.24w, which was the 17th overall and third-fastest among non-automatic qualifiers.

Less than two hours later, the duo added a berth in the 200 quarterfinals. Colebrooke was 15th overall, in 20.84, and Moore was 23rd, in 20.91. As he finished fourth in the second heat, Colebrooke notched the fastest non-automatic-qualifying time. Moore, who was fourth in the fourth heat, edged out the 24th-place finisher by 0.01 seconds to claim the final non-automatic berth in the quarterfinals.

Junior Jalil Brewer competed in the shot put and placed 15th overall, just three places and 0.19 meters shy of punching his ticket to the NCAA Championships. His throw of 18.49 meters, which came on his second of three attempts, would be tied for No. 9 in team history if he weren't already No. 3. Brewer's weekend continues with the discus on Friday.

The final event of the night was the 10,000 meters, where junior Curt Eckstein placed 19th overall in 29:27.70. His time would be seventh in the Purdue record books if he didn't set the third-fastest time two weeks ago. The race marked the end of the season for the Oldenburg, Indiana, native, who also competed at the 2020-21 NCAA Cross Country Championships and earned All-Big Ten First Team honors.

Senior Malcolm Dotson raced twice, in the 200 and 400. He was 29th in the 200, in 21.04w, and, just over an hour earlier, was 41st in the 400 in 47.80. Dotson will race again as part of the 4x100 relay with Colebrooke and Moore on Friday.

Sophomore Isaiah Martin began the meet in the long jump, where he was 40th overall. He earned a mark of 6.99 meters, which came on his first attempt. Martin's season continues at the NCAA Championships, where he qualified in the decathlon.

The four-day meet continues on Thursday, May 27, as Purdue's women make their NCAA debut at North Florida's stadium. The men are back in action on Friday, May 28, and the women conclude the meet on Saturday, May 29. On Thursday, field events for the Boilermakers begin at 3 p.m. ET, and running events commence at 7 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, field events start at 1:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, and running events get underway at 5:30 p.m.
