Two Boilermakers Into Semifinals at B1G Championships

3/6/2021 3:04:00 PM | Wrestling

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Senior Devin Schroder and sophomore Kendall Coleman have advanced to the semifinals at the 2021 Big Ten Wrestling Championships, leading the Boilermakers to a tie for ninth place with 23.5 team points after the first session.

The Boilermakers opened the day going 8-2 in the first round, but Schroder and Coleman were the only two to win their second bout. The No. 7 seed at 125 pounds, Schroder started the day with a 2-0 victory over No. 10 seed Justin Cardani of Illinois, using an escape and a stalling point to account for the difference. He followed up with a 3-1 overtime victory over Nebraska's No. 2 seed Liam Cronin, trading escapes in regulation and then securing a takedown in the extra period to reach the semifinals for the second straight season. Schroder will face No. 3 seed Malik Heinselman of Ohio State in tonight's session with a trip to the finals on the line.

Coleman got going early, rolling up a 12-3 major decision over Indiana's Luke Baughman. The No. 4 seed at 157, Coleman rolled up five takedowns in the bout and posting his team-best fourth major decision of the season. A 3-2 victory followed in the quarterfinals for the Purdue sophomore, earning the lone takedown of the match in his win over No. 5 seed Brady Berge of Penn State. Coleman has a rematch of last year's Big Ten Championship match in tonight's semifinals, squaring off with top-seeded Ryan Deakin of Northwestern.

Both Schroder and Coleman secured their automatic bids to the NCAA Championships with Saturday morning's performance, and they will be joined by true freshman Jacob Rundell in St. Louis, as he locked up a bid at 133 pounds. Rundell topped Wisconsin's No. 9 seed Kyle Burwick 3-2, scoring a third-period takedown in the win, before falling to top-seed Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State in the quarterfinals 9-3. Rundell will receive a forfeit from Ohio State's Jordan Decatur in Saturday night's session, and will face either Michigan State's Jordan Hamden or Indiana's Kyle Luigs tonight in the consolation quarterfinals.

Seniors Griffin Parriott and Max Lyon, junior Parker Filius, sophomore Thomas Penola and freshman Gerrit Nijenhuis all won their first match, but fell in the quarters to start their Big Ten Tournament. Parriott earned a 4-0 decision over Maryland's Michael North in the first round before falling in a nail-biter, 4-1, to Minnesota's No. 6 seed Michael Blockhus in the quarters. Minnesota lobbed the challenge brick in the third period to call Parriott for a locked-hands penalty, giving the Gopher a 2-1 lead late in the match. Parriott sold out for a takedown late and surrendered two for the final difference.

Lyon suffered a similar fate in the quarters after a 3-2 decision over No. 10 seed Rocky Jordan of Ohio State in the opening round. Tied 4-4 with No. 2 seed Christopher Weiler of Wisconsin in the third period, Lyon got caught in danger and surrendered a four-count with his back exposed to give up a takedown and two nearfall points. Filius topped Michigan's No. 8 seed Drew Mattin in his opener 4-3, but fell to top-seeded Jaydin Eierman of Iowa in the quarters.

Penola posted an 8-3 decision over Minnesota's Garrett Joles in his first match, but suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of No. 3 seed Jacob Warner of Iowa in the quarterfinals. Nijenhuis avenged a regular-season loss to No. 8 seed Jake Tucker of Michigan State, scoring a first-period takedown in a 3-2 win. The Boilermaker rookie was bounced to the wrestlebacks by No. 1 seed Alex Marinelli of Iowa in the quarterfinals 8-2.

Freshmen Emil Soehnlen and Dorian Keys lost their first matches of the day as Soehnlen was pinned by No. 5 seed Donnell Washington of Indiana, while Keys suffered a 4-0 defeat from No. 5 seed Christian Lance of Nebraska. Soehnlen bounced back with a 4-3 decision over Northwestern's Troy Fisher to advance to tonight's session, while Keys was eliminated from the tournament by Indiana's Rudy Streck.

Tonight's action begins at 7:30 p.m. ET, live on the Big Ten Network with the semifinals, while consolation bouts will be available on BTN+.
